“Carrauntoohil/Corrán Tuathail”
About this print
“Carrauntoohil/Carrán Tuathail” is an original, limited edition, hand-pulled lino print. It is designed, carved and hand printed in West Cork. It is one of the biggest linocut prints I can currently produce.
Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s highest mountain at 1,038.6 metres and is located on the beautiful Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. Carrán Tuathail, as it is known in Irish, means “Inverted Sickle” or “Tuathail’s Serated Sickle”. The mountain range itself dates from the Devonian period (410 to 350 million years ago), when Ireland was in a hot equatorial climate.
This print takes in the MacGillicuddy Reeks (Na Cruacha Dubha), which is home to three of Irelands highest mountain peaks, Carrauntoohil (1039m), Beenkeragh (1008m) and Caher (1000m). You can also see the Eastern Reeks which includes Cnoc an Chuillinn, Maolán Buí, Cnoc na Péiste, The Big Gun and Cruach Mhór as well as the Coomloughra Reeks which include Caher (West Top), Caher, Carrauntoohil, The Bones and Beenkeragh. Also to be found are lakes such as Lough Coomloughra, Lough Eagher, Lough Callee and Lough Gouragh amongst others.
I kept this print very close to the actual contour lines on the map, with each line corresponding to an elevation change of 50 metres. For those not familiar with topographic maps, contour lines connect points of equal height above sea level. The closer the lines are together, the steeper the terrain.
Each “Carrauntoohil/Carrán Tuathail” is individually printed by hand using the highest quality fade resistant ink on archival quality paper. For this edition, I have chosen copper ink on 145gsm Zerkall smooth paper. This is a mould made, part cotton paper, acid free and conservation quality. This means that your print will resist fading, yellowing and deterioration.
*Please note that the print comes unframed. The images supplied are simply to give an idea of how it may look when framed.
Please note that your print was made by a human hand and not a printing machine. This means that there will be small variations between prints, which adds to their uniqueness.
If a print is out of stock, please check back again in a couple of weeks, as I will be printing more. If a limited edition sells out, it will be removed from the shop.
Due to the size of the print, it will be sent rolled in a protective mailing tube and packaged to avoid damage to the print. It will be ready to bring to a framers for framing.
